Play and Group Therapy

Giving children the freedom to explore and express

Child-centered Play and Group Therapy is a mental health intervention for little kids up to the age 10. Children facing difficulties in behavior, expression, social skills, etc. find help in this therapy.

Through play and interaction with peers, children are able to express better and enhance their social skills. They are also able to showcase their emotions through the activities. Play and Group Therapy may be Directive or Non-Directive.

  • Directive: A controlled environment in which the therapist uses a hands-on approach to guide children through activities
  • Non-directive: The environment is less controlled in this therapy where children are free to choose the activity they enjoy without any interference.

Play and Group Therapy has proven to benefit children with autism, anxiety disorders, PTSD, sexual abuse, and physical & emotional trauma.

Vocational Training

Vocational training prepares learners for jobs that are based in manual or practical activities, traditionally non-academic and completely related to a specific trade or occupation. The learners directly develop expertise in a particular set of skills required for an occupation. Vocational training is an important ingredient in achieving inclusion for all persons with different abilities, provide young adults a means of livelihood and create a sense of self-worth and dignity.

Our vocational training programme aims to give our older children/adolescents the required skills like problem solving, communication, attention to detail, mathematical skills, self-motivation etc and hands on experience to their occupation.

School Readiness

If a child can hold a pencil, write their own name, count to 100, recognize all colors and shapes but, doesn’t know how to manage their emotions, make friends, resolve conflicts, be independent and have self-help skills, then none of the other things matter.

To put it simply, when a child shows up for school and is not physically and mentally ready to learn, he or she never catches up. School readiness refers to whether a child is ready to make an easy and successful transition into school. The development of school readiness skills allows school teachers to expand and further develop a child’s skills in the specific areas of social interaction, play, language, emotional development, physical skills, literacy and fine motor skills. When a child enters school without these basic skills, he/she might very soon be found lagging behind at school in comparison to their classmates.

In addition to academic basics, our school readiness programme also focuses on 1. SELF CARE- eating, opening/ closing boxes and bottles, using a spoon/ eating with hands, washing hands, wiping their nose, asking for help when sick, dressing/ buttoning/ unbuttoning, open/close zip.

  • INDEPENDENCE- being away from parents, clean up after play, routines, using the toilet, washing/ drying their hand, sharing and turn taking.
  • Speaking and literacy, listening and understanding, writing skills and much more.

The aim of our school readiness programme at HAPPY CHILD DEVELOPMENT AND REHABILITATION CENTRE is to teach and improve these foundation skills in children who are about to start school.

Sensory Integration Therapy

Enhancing the use of senses

Children on the autism spectrum often face challenges while using their senses, especially when they have to use them together. Sensory Integration Therapy is devised to help them enhance this ability and tackle repetitive behavior, which is a product of difficulty processing sensory information.

Developed quite recently in the 1970s, Sensory Integration Therapy uses play-oriented techniques and tools. Swings, slides, climbing toys, and trampolines are the most commonly used equipment. Each of them aims at engaging more than 1 sense at a time – touch, hearing, sight, taste, and smell. They also make therapy interesting as well as helpful, positively impacting children’s confidence.

In a few instances, we have also seen this form of therapy ease other difficulties related to autism such as emotional control.

Occupational Therapists who are trained in Sensory Integration Therapy attend to different sensory concerns such as

  • Oral sensitivity
  • Noise sensitivity
  • Visual sensitivity
  • Tactile/Touch sensitivity
  • Vestibular sensitivity (Concerns with movement)
  • Olfactory sensitivity
  • Proprioceptive sensitivity (Clumsiness and uncoordinated movements).

Aquatic Therapy

Befriending the unique environment of water!

Hydrotherapy or Aquatic Therapy is carried out to boost sensory processing and provide physical exercise. It is also a great way to enhance self-regulation. Children with special needs, joint motion concerns, musculoskeletal conditions, and neurological conditions are often advised to choose Aquatic Therapy.

Water, with its soothing nature, gentle pressure, and buoyancy provides muscle relaxation. Physiotherapists trained in Aquatic Therapy administer these sessions in a rehabilitation center. Understanding the physical laws of water is paramount in this situation and only experts can apply them correctly.

The most significant benefits of Aquatic Therapy are better coordination and larger range of motion, improved physical endurance, better balance, enhanced fine motor skills, reduced stress & pain, and controlled breathing.

Hydrostatic pressure, vestibular stimulation, and proprioceptive feedback are some of the approaches taken in this form of therapy.

Behaviour Modification

Positively rectifying behavioral challenges In Behavior Therapy, an approach called Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) is employed, which defines how the child’s behavior is influenced by their environment and how they are learning new things. Post analysis, therapy is designed to encourage or impart helpful behaviors while simultaneously reducing harmful behaviors. ABA also helps improve communication and language skills, focus, attention, and social skills. The final course of the therapy depends on the goals to be achieved and the skill areas include motor skills, self-care behaviors, etc. A comprehensive ABA program may include: Children with special needs, especially those on the autism spectrum, benefit greatly from ABA programs.

Special Education

Giving children some extra care, attention, and support

Extra help and support in learning concepts and topics at school can be broadly termed Special Education. Many children benefit from this form of therapy because it assists them in catching up with their peers.

Kids with learning disabilities due to emotional, behavioral, physical, or mental disabilities are eligible for Special Education and many of them have benefited greatly from the program. Services offered usually include

  1. Speech Therapy
  2. Occupational Therapy
  3. Individualized Education Program
  4. Art Therapy
  5. Music Therapy
  6. Physical Therapy

Special Education is delivered or offered by not just one therapist because the needs of the child may vary. At times, an Occupational Therapist may take the lead but other children may need Physical Therapy and Art Therapy more. This is why, the program is not template-based. It depends on the shortcomings of the child and the areas that need to be worked upon. There are also support specialists with an educational and professional background in Special Education who oversee and drive the sessions.

Physical Therapy

Motivating little kids to improve their motor skills Pediatric Physiotherapy is a specialized branch of Physiotherapy that focuses on children who have delayed development of motor skills. They usually have movement and functional disability, which is tackled with the use of activities and exercises. This form of therapy aids children with the following challenges:
  • Neurological difficulties: Children with cerebral palsy or a physical disability that directly impacts movement
  • Musculoskeletal difficulties: Growth-related pain, joint pain, etc.
  • Gross motor development difficulties: Delays in crawling, sitting up, and walking
  • Coordination difficulties
  • Balance difficulties
Post assessment, the therapist may recommend only Physiotherapy or a combination of therapies such as Occupational, Speech, Aquatic, and Physiotherapy. Fun is an essential component in this kind of therapy in particular because it motivates children and makes them look forward to the sessions. Children who show interest in therapy tend to benefit the most. Therapists also include parents in the recovery process by recommending exercises and activities for home.
